HEADACHES

Headaches are extremely common and are often accepted as an everyday occurrence that we learn to live with and accept. When headaches start impacting upon our everyday lives it is time to seek help in identifying the cause. Headaches are often a symptom of an underlying dysfunction, which with the right help can be identified and treated.

It is reported in the UK two-thirds of adult males and over 80% of females will be affected by tension-type headaches, with 1 adult in 20 having a headache every day. Nearly 200,000 people in the UK experience migraines everyday (World Health Organisation, 2004).

Headaches can often be classified as primary or secondary. Primary headaches are the most common type and these include:

Tension headaches – these can radiate from the muscles in the back and neck and are often termed cervicogenc headaches.

Cluster headaches – often extremely painful and can happen in episodes of varying intensity.

Migraines- Sever headaches, which again can vary in intensity and symptoms. Some people often experience aura prior to onset of these headaches.

Secondary headaches are less common but potentially more serious and can often have a neurological component to them which would need to be investigated fully by appropriately qualified physicians.

Manor Chiropractic & Applied Kinesiology will investigate all causes of reported headaches and where a headache falls within the primary type; a cause, or causes will be identified and the appropriate treatment given.

Where a headache is considered more serious and beyond the scope of chiropractic a referral will be made to your general practitioner (GP) for appropriate investigation.
